Rise A Knight

27 Oct 2008So yesterday, a married couple walked into the movie theater to attend an 11:20 movie. Little did they know that a church had taken over and was holding the movie industry hostage… different story. This is how conversation went (sort of):
Husband: Wow, this is great that they let you meet here.
Me: Yes, they are very cooperative.
Wife: I can’t believe they don’t have the 11:20 movie playing.
Husband: So what kind of church are you?
Me: What do you mean?
Wife: BAPTIST?! METHODIST?! well, I’m catholic.
Me: you could say we just love Jesus.
Wife: I guess we’ll just come back for the 1 o’clock movie since they don’t have the 11:20 movie.
Wife: The internet said they had an 11:20 movie.
I just threw that in there for laughs. I offered them a cup of coffee and was able to explain that part of the money from our coffee purchase goes to aiding Rwanda. This is where the fun began! The couple immediately responded by sharing the fact that we have too many hungry, homeless, and helpless people in America to be sending aid to other countries.
I want to know what you guys think?
It is true that the government as well as many Christian organizations send support to other countries. What’s your stance? Who would you help?
We finished our conversation like so:
Husband: Have you ever been outside the country?
Me: Yes, I’ve been to Japan and the Bahamas with hopes of going to Africa/India.
Husband: Yes, but have you haven’t been to one of those broken countries.
Husband: It will break your heart.
That struck me funny. For two people so defensive about sending support to other countries, he was very moved by well… another country.
No Responses to Where would you send help?

Why can’t we do both? In Deuteronomy 15:11 God commands us to open our hands wide to your brother, your poor and your needy, in your land. Today we have more knowledge of what goes on in the world and because we have knowledge, we should act. Faith without works is dead.

this is the way i see it. God gave us a commisioning to the whole world. That includes the very ground you are sitting on. So for those of you out there who think we dont belong in Iraq or we need to help ourselves before we help other people. I am standing strong on my inward opinion and saying you are wrong. I have heard from some people of Iraq saying how thankful they are that we are there. I have heard the same thing from a homeless man in the park in my city when we took him some supplies. How about I quit being so selfish and start being a little more like Jesus… Selfless…and you dont have to be in a any certain place to do it.

Hmm while I understand (to an extent) what they are saying, are there any American organizations, that we would want to support, selling coffee? The poor in our country still seem to have so much more than those in other countries. I think as American’s we have such a messed up view about what is essential for survival. I have a friend who may lose her house because she can’t pay the mortgage, but they still have cable TV and internet service and cell phones.

It is our calling to help all people who “need” help, whether it is another country or right in our own back yard, (I mean our country, our town, our city). God gave Himself just for us so why aren’t we giving to others that need us.
We might give to people and be unsure of how they will use what we give. That is not for us to deal with. It is our command to give and allow God to do the rest in that person’s life.
Give no matter to where, when, who, how, just give and watch how God will work in your life.
